1) Introduction
Many years ago as payment for consulting work, I took a laptop early NCR. I bought a HUGE bag to keep it. Since then I tried to grab a complete office in a single, easy-to-shopping bag. It's not a laptop bag or briefcase or tote bag with wheels and handle - a single or a shoulder bag. This is how I did it - with a few ideas on how you too.
2) Objectives for my "system in a bag"
Web Access
What I wanted to be abledo when you access the Web and e-mail from anywhere. Although I realize that this is probably not the Gobi desert, I wanted to be able to cover telephony places where they had to work. I did not realize at the time, but I was moving into "cloud", I discovered that I have more and more of my work in Web-based applications do. The main advantage is the ability to move from computer to computer without having to carry files with me.
Local Access
Obviously I need to access local files- Be on a hard disk spinning and various types of USB devices. Even the goal - never lose access to files no matter where you are. When I wrote an article and had it on my desktop, you forgot a card or a Memory Stick copy, I had no luck until I get home.
Secure
My friend Mike James has hammered into me over the years. If I had access to e-mail or file transfer, should be safe and secure. Information required to be shared, if necessary, but at other timesNecessary files back and forth to be sure.
Messenging
Web access includes access to the Google G-Talk and the ability to Web-based phone, even if you do not use. I wanted to be able to get in touch with the world of car I had to stay.
Documents
I'm trying so hard to eliminate paper. I chose the PC has a touch screen, but are not fully exploited. I use more and more documents in PDF, Word or Google doc formats. I wanted to achievethe point where I do not need to take notes with pen and ink. I am close, but as you can see, there is still one more step to go, I hope.
Presentations
I am a "sometimes" Speaker and moderator, I wanted access to PowerPoint, if necessary. I wanted to take this opportunity, web presentations, even if you do not have access to a laptop computer, CD or USB stick.
Backup Files
Being a bit 'paranoid, I would like copies of copies of copies of important things. Some local, someOut of Office. This solution has to save routes and provide access to files remotely. What should I say? If you ever had a hard disk, a CD scratched or lost lost a portable hard drive or a USB stick, you know the pain of not having a backup.
3) equipment
I opted for equipment I could afford it, that the criteria for multi-functionality and mobility. There are several ways to do what I did with various devices, I'm just the categories of equipment and software,You can work anywhere.
UMPC
UMPC stands for Ultra Mobile PC and is extremely easy for any PC. As far as possible, I think Palm Treo smartphone includes a UMPC. The point is, is a small, easy to carry your PC does a lot of time on battery. Since most of us on a PC or laptop all day cuddling, no sense that one does not need another phase, heavy wheeled vehicles have dead bear?
Fujitsu P1610
1610is a small, lightweight, and Windows PC with integrated wireless LAN, a PC Card slot, which for the Verizon Mobile Broadband Card It also has a slot for SD memory card that allows me to data files in my Treo Exilim digital camera and share them with others. The biggest drawback is the smaller keyboard since I have large hands, but I learned to do with it.
The 60 GB is more than enough, since most of my storage is by far, the extended battery gives me over 3 hours of use. There is no CD drive, but I can copyThings for your hard drive or my external USB 120GB drive. This device is the beginning of the "platform" on which the whole system is built.
Windows Smartphone
Why a smartphone? Why not Symian, Palm or Blackberry? Mainly because I already comfortable with Windows, and no matter what you think of Microsoft, Windows and Windows Mobile I "play well together." Windows Mobile offers e-mail, Word, Excel and PowerPoint as well as calendar, contacts, etc. And then you see that Ibuilt-in (free) software that allows me to eliminate most of handwritten notes.
Palm Treo 750
The Treo is my "mobile computer" in many ways. It 's a bit bulky, but the battery lasts a long time and it took a lot of drops. installed with a 4 GB SD card (card-sized stamp with 4 gigabytes of storage space), I have tons of storage space. I have the music, podcasts, and books from Audible.com.
The phone has enabled over mobile-sync, which means that my e-mail is enabledautomatically "pushed" to the phone.
A very useful tool in Word Mobile. I can read and edit documents or text file that is open, I could use. But if I have an idea for a blog post or article that I can call up Word and thumb-type, and then select "Send as e-mail." The mail client comes in and choose my Gmail account.
Later, when I check Gmail from your computer "real", I can choose to open the note "Open as Google Document" and there it is. This eliminated writingScores - in fact, is removed from all the manuscripts.
Windows Mobile has Windows Media Player. This means, I have all my music and audio on the SD card 4GB. with a range of Etymotic earphones, Windows Media joins me from around the world listen to audio books or music or podcasts. Another benefit - when a call comes in while I listen to music and WMP continues to answer the call. The microphone can be heard on, even with headphones so you can speak and - ifCompletion of the call, the music starts again right where he was arrested.
Since I have a data plan from my mobile provider, I can in my Google Account and a separate program called Free GooSync to sync my Google calendar on my phone. The result is that I have an appointment with any browser with Google Calendar, and point to a key on my smart phone for this new event on the phone - and they gave me the memories!
Case / Pack
I started out with a shoulder bag, buthave graduated to a laptop shoulder. The point here is everything you need to get the job done in a bag. A shoulder bag has literally become my mobile office holders. I recommend a single bag-like spin or something on the back Geek, plastic clips that you take out and put them on is easier.
Digital Camera
I am currently using a Casio Exilim digital camera for its small size. Again, the key to information portability of the SD memory card. My FujitsuLifebook UMPC has a slot for SD cards, so I can copy photos and video on your PC and then transfer them to Gspace or Strong Space (more on that later), or via e-mail or by post to Facebook.
I say video, digital cameras several times. The Exilim, a bit 'bigger shoots AVI (low resolution) video. Most new cameras shoot MPEG files, which have a higher resolution.
So keep a small digital camera has allowed me to capture things that do not otherwise. You can notappear to be part of an "office", but since they are mobile, it is worthwhile to take a camera for other reasons. The Casio was shot, so I can shoot close pictures of business cards and handwritten notes on a napkin to leave. Again, the signature point, as far as possible eliminated.
On a side note, how many times I'm working on a Starbucks or somewhere similar to see and others to open their laptop and a notebook and a pen next to it. The digital switchover will be able to eliminate the paper -at least that is my goal!
High Capacity SD Cards
I mentioned SD (Secure Digital) several times. These are the shipping costs of memory card formats that are used in most cameras and mobile phones today. They are available in sizes up to 16 GB (!), A lot of the data storage.
It means local store and just copying files. I have a 256 MB card in my camera and 4 GB card in my phone. Imagine a small hard drive that easily swaps.
High quality earphones
These areImportant for a number of reasons. First, you connect your smart phone for listening to music or audio and allow them to receive calls and listen to the conversation in both ears. This ability is great when you're in the car.
Since most mobile phones and a 2.5 mm headphone jack with 3.5 mm jack, you need an adapter. I do not need a separate media player (iPod or otherwise) is called the Treo with Windows Media Player music, podcasts or YouTube, or other playback devicesVideo.
Mobile Broadband Card
Mobile broadband is a way of saying that you are connected to the Internet via the mobile network. These cards are available to all cellular operators, but - beware - you will see a "data plan" to be used by your supplier and, depending on how you want your phone setup, there may be a bit 'expensive.
Recognize also that the mobile broadband not as fast as DSL or cable. Do not plan on downloading a large movie, but you can do almost anythingotherwise, you do on a networked PC.
The Mobile Broadband Card, you can process a signal of the cell - prevents you from having to pay for WiFi in a bar or airport.
USB Hard Drive
Attached USB hard disk got smaller and larger capacity. Used as a backup device and additional space, you can be 500 GB for about $ 100. Again, you can never have too much storage space or too many digital storage media!
4)Services
The miracle of each of these is, except for my Web-based storage, it's free! The idea is to be able to do everything you do, sitting in an office well equipped.
Web-based storage
High-capacity SD cards and USB hard drives connected, you have to do with Web-based storage? Because you never know, never know when the mobile unit could be lost. I have a plan with Joyent to me more than 20 GB of online storage, which I access via a secure clientsftpdrive.com.
We want to ensure the security of any offsite storage result of the configuration of the mobile phone, it would not be replaced if your mobile office has been lost or stolen. An option to store paid, as we shall see in the next section, your Gmail account, allowing you to 7 GB of online storage for free.
Jott.com
Jott is great. Registration, you will receive a toll-free number, the program of "1" on the phone and you are ready. Ready for what? Call the 800 number and press1 to Jott itself. Allow up to 15 seconds of a message and Jott will transcribe and email to you in text form. You can also record phone numbers and people Jott or groups of people. Ideal for broadcast messages to one or many. Great for the record, the next million dollar idea you get when driving. (Note: Since originally wrote this article, Jott for "beta", which means that it's some things that now costs a monthly fee were free, but the base.Voice to text is still free.)
Do you Twitter (www.twitter.com)? Twitter is different from Jott to send an SMS (up to 140 characters) to the phone number 40 404 and it appears in your Twitter page online.
I have a Twitter Gadget (gadget more later) Google to display my tweets (as they are called) on my Google homepage. Some people use Twitter to make mini-blog entries.
5) Software
Most of this is completely free. SFTP Driveis the only exception.
People love or hate Google. My concern is that I moved much of my work in this area of work called Google Desktop and Google if I die really in trouble. But, like so many of these points of Google had a local backup option, which can be discussed later.
Gmail
When I created a Gmail account I never thought I'd be away. I joined mainly so I could use Gtalk - Google's IM client. But then I startedfind it easier to use my Gmail address to fill out forms. Then I discovered that my Outlook does not work well in some hotels. I could e-mail but not send. Google sends and receives mail from any browser on any computer.
I started using Gmail more and more as it is browser-based, and I could get almost anywhere. You can also find the Google search on your e-mail as "stuff" is fast easy.
Gtalk
As I said, Google Gtalk instant messaging client. I do not know much, but running a chatfew close contacts has been of great help. If you want a lot of instant messaging, you may need a multi-client site, such as Pidgin (www.pidgin.im) that you have access to various services such as AIM.
G-docs
Google Docs has been turned into a blessing. It has the ability to load and open Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Two important points - once again the most important is that you get your documents from any computer. But secondly, you can easily work on a document orSpreadsheet with simple "release" of the site. You can use a single document or a folder of documents. Great for work, you can text documents, spreadsheets and presentations.
G-Notebook
I am not a user or Digg Delicious (marked for saving pages), to use the Google Toolbar (which is installed on your browser when you apply for a Google account) access to your favorite quick and easy. Click on the blue star in the Toolbar fileSite in Google Notebook to "Sites not archived. Once again - no matter what I'm on the computer. All my favorites are available.
G-space
G-space is a Firefox plugin that defines a file explorer window in your browser. You may not know that a free Google account comes with 7 GB of memory. While this is not a huge amount of music or video, is more than enough for saving documents or files that you need to run more than one location.
You can use a simple G-spaceUploading multiple documents into your Google account. Lose your laptop? No problem, you have a USB stick, right? Losing the bag and into trouble. Save the proposals and PowerPoint using G-space? Never lose a file.
G Calendar
Google Calendar is not as sexy, but it is very functional. The possibility of a timetable for cooperation is to share use it very easily. It 'easy to use and, yet, you can share a calendar with an assistant, working group or familyso that everyone in the same calendar.
GooSync
A free add-on for Windows Smartphone, GooSync calendar updates to your phone from your Google Calendar. E 'bi-directional and very easy to use. You never a duplicate entry of data - enter it once in Google Calendar and GooSync lead.
SFTP Drive
SFTP Drive offers secure access to other servers - the essence of your different storage offsite your Google Account. Work with FTP (File Transfer Protocol)and a worker of Windows, such as the unity of the SFTP server as a new drive on your desktop and allows you to drag and drop. I use in combination with my Joyent account important backup files.
6) Optional accessories for your mobile office
These elements are "useful" but not mandatory.
Audible Account
Audible.com is the leading site for audio books and other audio material. Audible comes with its own smartphone application, so you do not need an MP3 playerto listen to your favorite authors. Audible is a service purchased.
CD / DVD
With an external hard drive, I found an external CD / DVD reader / writer necessary - yet. If you want to burn CDs or watch DVDs, you may need. Some UMPC Sony still fit a DVD drive in your PC.
Or moleskin pad
(Sigh) There still could be if you have to write something. A pillow of small (often referred to as moleskin) can be thrown into the bag and does not add muchBulk. I use a small notebook Miquelrius which opens completely, without breaking the spine.
Digital Pen
I tried this yet, but I want to replace the fustian with one of the many digital pens are available. Basically, to 'see' how to write and store information in digital format. Some of them will even run on your handwriting converted to text and scratches. But you can also use the million dollar doodle electronically.
mobile printers
EvenI do not need it yet, but if you're an agent or broker, you need to be printed. I used the Canon I-90, which is small, light and color prints.
Bluetooth Mouse
Since the Fujitsu 1610 is a touch screen, has an integrated pen. But if you 'compulsive mouse is a Bluetooth mouse is a wireless solution. I use the Kensington Pilot Mouse.
Bluetooth Keyboard
This is another that I have not tried it yet but I'm thinking. ABluetooth keyboard folds small and communicates with the computer via a Bluetooth connection (wireless). Surprisingly, this is not for the PC, but for the Treo smartphone. Since you have a mobile version of Word, you can open a document on your phone and use a Bluetooth keyboard to open more such documents without increasing the PC.
7) Conclusions
There are probably hundreds of variations on the theme. I'm not saying this is perfect, but does not allow me to do something thatcan in my office, where I want to go.
